Kim and E. Scissorhands Doll by RandyGreen Kim and E. Scissorhands Doll by RandyGreen
A colored pencil commission I did of Kim from the Edward Scissorhands movie holding a doll of ES. Since I had a creator-owned series 'The Dollz', it was nice of my friend to make this particular request.

I don't do many of these because of the time that goes into it, but I always want to do more.

love it, simple, clean, interesting comp. is it all pencil colors only or does it have a marker base coat as well? also what quality of pencil colors do you use, is it water color pencils?

I think parts of it have a marker under base, probably the darker/brighter areas. Colored pencils looks sooth and continuous until you scan it, then you realize all the white paper showing through the color specs.

Yea that's why I asked, some parts looked somewhat full with color others were a little more transparent, it looks intentional so it still looks good whether it may have been sublminal or not, lol.

Yea, not only does it show through at times, but scanning also seems to add a little bit of unwanted saturation too at times. I'm not sure if prismacolors have a little bit of a wax base in them because they seem to reflect some light from scans when ive used them. water color pencils reflect much less though and look nicer in scans.

I thought it might have something to do with the grain of the paper. The pencil lead doesn't soak in and the white of the paper shows through when scanned, where the "eye" would blend it together more. A small version of what happens when you use charcoal on rough paper.

Oh yea, totally, paper makes a big difference too; somehow it totally slipped my mind. :S

Hotpressed arches or some canson papers are good examples of that, there are notable differences when using pencil colors between those and standard papers. But in general the marker base is quick, effective and works on any kind of decent paper and looks nice overall i find . Regardless, you're sucessful with it. My compliments :P

Oh, and been a fan of your stuff since you started on witchblade way back, really like your line art. And its nice to see you're greyscale marker and colored sketches, good stuff, keep posting em. :)

Thanks for the compliments! OH! I also forgot to mention, I sometimes put down a pastel base and rub it in with a tissue. It's not nearly as saturated as marker but it does give good coverage to the paper grain. It also can be pulled up with an eraser to reveal some hi-lites, then go back and do some colored pencil on top. That is a part of my technique that totally slipped my mind since it's been a while since I did one of those. It's kind of like a poor man's airbrush.

Nice! I'll definitely be trying that. Pastels is like one of the few mediums i don't have (airbrush being another @_@), looks like I'll definitely be picking some up to experiment with that.

Yeah, get some. And don't be scared. When you first rub some on, you'll think you've ruined it, but once you rub them in with some tissue or cotton it all blends smoothly. No worries.

Love this so much, even favorited it, but it really bothers me that her hair is so blonde in this. She was clearly a redhead. A light orangy red, but still red...

This is really impressive! It's so hard to translate facial features into a cartoon-ish style and keep them recognizable, but you've done it perfectly. Plus the anatomy is just right, and the pose, and expression, and the coloring... Everything looks great. :aww:
